Year B - Summer 1 - At The Seaside

This half term, our exciting topic is 'At the Seaside'. The children will gain knowledge on coastal environments and seaside traditions. Throughout the topic, the children will continue to build resilience and curiosity in their learning.

Literacy

In Literacy, the children will explore the story The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch by David Armitage and Ronda Armitage. They will imitate the style of the text before creating their own seaside-inspired writing. The children will also develop their speaking and listening skills through performance poetry, with a particular focus on limericks, rhyme and rhythm. Through reading, writing and performing poetry aloud, children will build confidence, fluency and expression.

Art

In Art, pupils will develop their textiles skills through creative dip dye techniques and by designing and making their own seaside scenes. They will also focus on sketching techniques, learning how to add detail, shading and texture to make their drawings appear more three-dimensional.

Geography

Children will investigate different types of coasts and explore what makes seaside locations unique. They will compare the seaside town of Blackpool with Cancún, identifying similarities and differences between the two locations. The children will also continue to revisit and strengthen their understanding of the seven continents, linking back to learning from previous topics.

PE

In PE, the children will focus on gymnastics, developing movements, balances and control using a range of apparatus. They will learn how to sequence movements and balances safely. The children will also build their striking and fielding skills through teamwork activities and games.

RE

In RE, we will explore different ways people speak to God and why prayer is important to many people. They will learn about different beliefs, traditions and ways people express their faith and feelings.

Music

In Music, the children will continue to compose, sing, listen to and appraise a variety of songs and musical styles. They will explore rhythm, pitch and performance skills while developing confidence in expressing themselves musically.

Computing

In our computing topic, pupils will collect information and learn how to present data digitally. They will use pictograms, tally charts and bar charts to organise and interpret information, helping them develop their understanding of data handling and technology.

PSHE

In PSHE, the children will learn about economic wellbeing. They will explore what money is, where it comes from and begin to understand the difference between needs and wants. Through discussions and practical activities, children will develop an awareness of making thoughtful choices.

MADD Week

During this half term, we will also celebrate our exciting MADD Week (Music, Art, Dance and Drama). Throughout the week, the children will have opportunities to develop their creativity through a variety of expressive arts activities and performances. This is a fantastic opportunity for children to showcase their talents and imagination.
