Year B - Spring 1 - Dinosaurs

This exciting cross-curricular topic brings learning to life as pupils explore the fascinating world of dinosaurs while developing skills across a range of subjects. The children also host a lovely Dinosaur Exhibition with adults invited to celebrate everything they have learnt throughout the topic.

Literacy

During this half term, we focus on Mary Anning through diary entries and explore her impact on the field of palaeontology while also discussing the challenges she faced in gaining recognition during a time when opportunities for women were limited.

Also, we learn about letter writing through postcards and the use of language in informal letters. By the end of the unit, we post letters to National Museums Liverpool about what we love from their virtual museum tour on dinosaurs!

History

Children learn about the pioneering fossil hunter Mary Anning and her important contributions to our understanding of prehistoric life. They explore the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, using timelines to understand when different dinosaurs lived and how life on Earth changed over time.

Art

Pupils get hands-on with clay to create their own dinosaur models. They develop practical skills such as scoring and joining, as well as rolling, moulding and carving techniques to bring their creations to life.

Science

Pupils study animals, including humans, and learn how to classify them into groups such as fish, amphibians, mammals, birds, insects and reptiles. They also explore diets, identifying herbivores, carnivores and omnivores, linking this knowledge to different types of dinosaurs.

Computing

Children use 'Paintz' online to develop their digital drawing skills, learning how to create and refine images effectively using online tools.

Religious Education (RE)

Pupils explore the question: How do we know that new babies are special? They learn about beliefs and celebrations from a variety of religions, encouraging respect and understanding of different traditions.

Music

Children continue to build their skills through singing, composing, performing, listening and appraising using the Charanga programme.

Physical Education (PE)

Pupils explore dance from different cultures and develop their gymnastic abilities through floor movements, improving coordination, balance and confidence.
