Year B - Autumn 2 - Polar Adventure

This term, we are excited to begin our Polar Adventure topic, where children will explore the wonders of the Arctic and Antarctica through a range of engaging, creative and hands-on learning experiences.

Design and Technology

In Design and Technology, children will develop their cutting, measuring and joining skills using a variety of materials to design and create their own Arctic and Antarctic scenes. They will explore different techniques while building imaginative polar landscapes.

English

Our English learning will be inspired by two reading books.

Using 'The Last Polar Bear' by Jean Craighead George, children will research the Arctic and polar bears to write non-chronological reports, developing their factual writing skills.

Through 'Leaf' by Sandra Dieckmann, children will create descriptive narratives focused on writing to entertain, using exciting vocabulary and descriptions to bring their stories to life.

Science

In science, we will learn about Derby hero Polar Preet and her incredible achievements, including her inspiring expedition walking through Antarctica. This will link to our learning about polar environments, resilience and exploration.

Geography

In geography, children will explore the seven continents, learn about the Arctic and Antarctic climates, and compare temperatures, habitats and animals found in polar regions with those in our local area. We will think about what makes places similar and different around the world.

Physical Education

In PE, our focus will be on yoga and invasion games. Children will develop balance, coordination and mindfulness through yoga while also building reciprocal and game skills in invasion games.

Nativity Performance

A highlight of the term will be preparing for and performing our annual Nativity, which we look forward to sharing with parents and families as we celebrate together.

We are looking forward to a fantastic term of exploration, creativity and adventure as we journey to the polar regions together!
